Excitement is building for the annual gathering of some of the biggest names in women’s tennis as anticipation grows for the start of the 2013 PTT Pattaya Open. Now in its 22nd year, the Pattaya Open is an established part of the World Tennis Association’s women international series and one of Pattaya’s biggest annual sporting events.

This year the Pattaya Open is starting slightly earlier than usual on the 26th January with the singles and doubles finals both scheduled on February 3rd. As usual, the action will take place at the state-of-the-art tennis facilities in the grounds of the Dusit Thani hotel. Those wanting tickets can order online at very reasonable prices ranging from 300 to 1,200 baht on all days including the grand final.

The top seed for this year’s tournament will be the former world number one Ana Ivanovich from Serbia, renowned for her aggressive style of play. The second seed who will no doubt attract enormous support from Pattaya’s large Russian community is the sensational Maria Kirilenko who won a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games. Also causing great excitement is the presence in the draw of the two rising starts of British tennis , Heather Watson and Laura Robson. Laura Robson, the youngest ever winner of the Junior Wimbledon Title at the age of just 14, is tipped for great things having been voted the WTA’s Newcomer of the Year in 2012.

There is also plenty of Asian interest at this year’s event led by five of the biggest stars of the region Japan’s Ayumi Morita, Kimiko Date-Krumm and Misaki Doi being joined by Taiwan’s leading starts Chang Kai-chen and Su-Wei Hsieh. Thailand is also strongly represented with a guarantee of at least four spots for the best local talent including Shahar Peer who lifted the Pattaya title in 2006. This will give local players the experience of facing established players in a big tournament setting.

One of the reasons the tournament is so successful are the exceptional facilities offered at the Dusit Thani. The fact that the stars can stay in the luxurious surroundings of the hotel and then take a short walk to the court is a big bonus in the eyes of the players. The way they feel about playing at the tournament was summed by the champion of the last two years, Daniela Hantuchova ‘I feel comfortable playing in Pattaya City. I love the weather, the courts are in the hotel and near the beach, and the people are so nice’.
