For the sports fan, Pattaya is a great city. Not only does it host to many international sporting tournaments on an occasional basis, it also holds a number of leading international sporting events every year. For people living in the city, the event offers an opportunity to see international sporting stars and great sporting action up close.

WTA PTT Pattaya Open Tennis – February

Every February, the Women’s Tennis Association brings some of the world’s leading players for the Pattaya Open. The tournament has been held annually since 1991 and is currently classified as an international series competition.

The Pattaya Open holds both a singles and doubles championship at the Dusit Thana resort and attracts thousands of fans every year.

In 2012, Slovak Daniela Hantuchová retained the title she won in 2011 against Russian Maria Yuryevna Kirilenko.

Honda LPGA Thailand Golf Championship – February

Following quickly after the ladies tennis in February, the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) comes to town for the Honda Championship. The event is the second in the LPGA tour calendar and brings the elite of women’s professional golf to Thailand.

Since 2007, the event has been held at the Siam Country Club with the Old Course being the favoured 18 holes, although in 2009 the Plantation Course was used. The tournament is a limited field event with no cut.

In 2012, Taiwanese golfing sensation Yani Tseng retained the title she won the previous year shading Japanese golfer Ai Miyazato by a single shot.

Top of the Gulf Regatta – May

The next of our list of five leading annual Pattaya sporting events leaves the land and takes to the water.

The Top of the Gulf Regatta is Asia’s leading sailing event bringing international sailors to compete over a wide range of classes from small dinghies and windsurfers, to keel and multi-hull, ocean going sailing boats. The races take place in the waters opposite Jomtien beach and provide a fabulous sporting spectacle.

King’s Cup Pattaya International Marathon – July

The Pattaya marathon starts very early in the morning – to give the athletes a degree of protection from the ravages of the sun. It also helps the organisers with traffic control. For the last couple of years the event has been held in July, but it does move around a bit so check the press for the date.

The Pattaya marathon is part of a weekend of events which includes separate events over shorter distances as well as a wheelchair race.

The main race, the King’s Cup Pattaya International Marathon, attracts an international field – particularly from the distance running powerhouse nations of east Africa. It is always a thrilling event and draws large crowds.

Jet Ski King’s World Cup Grand Prix – December

The final one of our annual Pattaya sporting events is another waterborne, but high thrills annual Pattaya sporting event – the King’s Cup jet ski Championship. This is a full international event usually with entrants from over 30 countries and is classified as a World Cup Grand Prix event.

Usually the King’s Cup takes place in December and comprises of racing around a course in the bay. Although there are other races, the main event is for professional racers on 1800cc seated jet skis.

The races are spectacular and thrilling and normally draw crowds in excess of 10,000. ESPN will be televising the 2012 event.
